As we head into those warm, sunny fun-filled days, we encourage you to make reading an important part of your child’s experience.    The summer months offer the perfect opportunity for children to explore the adventurous, curious, and often humorous worlds that lie between the covers of a good book.   Reading helps your child to grow in their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and in their writing.  The more they read, the more they will succeed!

As parents, we ask that you support your child’s growth in literacy by modeling a love of literature at home.  Setting aside reading time, asking your child about what he or she is reading, or creating a little book club where you and your child read and discuss the books together can go a long way.  

Language Arts Reading Lists

•  We have provided summer reading lists for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8.  This year students have a specific book they are required to read in each class.  Then they should select a second book of their choice from the list.
• They will be expected to discuss and analyze these books upon their return to school, so we strongly suggest that students take notes as they read.  
• They will need a copy of their books when we return to school.   
• We encourage your child to read as many books as possible from these lists and beyond!  Come September, your child will have an opportunity to select a favorite summer book to create a project for our annual Fall Reading Fair.   More details about the reading fair project will be disclosed in the fall.  

Social Studies Reading Lists

• Students going into grades 6 through 8 are also required to read one text that will introduce them to the essential facts and vocabulary they will need to begin the next school year.  A separate Social Studies reading list has been created.
